SERVICES
Parking
Stellenbosch University offers staff, students, and visitors parking on university grounds within the context of the SU’s Parking Management System. This system allows for differentiated parking for the optimal utilisation of the limited parking available on central campus.
Important:
- Once an application is submitted, a parking allocation is guaranteed HOWEVER, you will not necessarily be allocated the area and type of parking requested since the allocation is dependent on availability.
- All parking areas are overallocated by a certain percentage based on historical data and due to dynamic movement patterns of student with varying daily schedules therefore
- Registration of a motor vehicle and the payment of the parking tariff DO NOT guarantee a parking bay but only ensure the right of access to the particular type of parking bay on a first come, first served basis.
For example, if you were allocated a specific parking area, you may sometimes arrive to find it already full due to overallocation. In such cases, you will need to use the designated overflow parking, as indicated on your parking disc - If you no longer require your allocated parking, please email the Parking Office to request a cancellation. Otherwise, your parking application will remain active and valid.
Terms and conditions (SU Parking rules and Regulations)
Should students or staff wish to park a private motor vehicle or a university vehicle on university grounds, this vehicle must be electronically registered at the relevant University division.
Access to certain parking areas, or portions thereof, may be temporarily restricted at short notice due to operational requirements, such as maintenance, construction projects, or events like “Woordfees.” Where applicable, appropriate arrangements will be made in a timely manner.
- The applicant confirms that he/she has personally applied for access to parking on Stellenbosch University grounds.
- The applicant gives permission that the parking tariff based on the type of parking allocated to him/her:
- May be deducted from his/her salary (staff), or
- Will be paid via card payment at the SU cashiers or via EFT, only if electronic deduction is not possible.
- May be collected via his/her student account (student).
- The applicant undertakes to obey the rules applicable to university parking, as set out in the terms and conditions.
- The applicant accepts that, in order to promote the optimal utilization of parking areas, for certain types of parking bays more staff and students will be allocated to an area than are parking bays available. The principle of “first come, first served” therefore applies to the use of this type of parking. This means that the registration of a motor vehicle and the payment of the parking tariff do not necessarily guarantee a parking bay. See “Types of parking areas and parking bays for more information”
- The applicant accepts that while he/she may receive additional parking discs, this is only an arrangement to enable the identification of vehicles and does not provide the applicant with authorization to park more than one vehicle on university grounds simultaneously.
- The applicant accepts that a lack of available parking does not justify non-compliance with parking rules and regulations, and that any record of contraventions may be considered when assessing future parking applications.
- The applicant accepts responsibility for the payment of any fines incurred as a result of non-compliance with these rules.
- The applicant accepts that the booms and other measures implemented are for access control only and not security reasons. Although SU has Campus Security staff, it does not guarantee safety.
- The applicant accepts that vehicles are parked on university grounds at their own risk, and the University cannot be held liable for any damage to or theft of vehicles, including any resulting loss. The only exception applies where damage or loss is directly caused by unsafe or defective University equipment or property. In such cases, claims will be considered only in accordance with Section 61 of the Consumer Protection Act (Act 68 of 2008).
- Must be displayed on the motor vehicle’s front windscreen at all times as proof of the agreement between SU and the disc holder.
- Is only valid for the year indicated on the disc.
- Only allows the disc holder access to the type of parking (reserved, non-reserved, general, disabled) and specific parking area(s) he or she has authorization for.
- If you do not receive your parking disc within a month of your parking allocation it is your responsibility to follow up with your campus Parking Coordinator.
- Parking discs are distributed at the beginning of the year following the initial application period. Staff who apply after this period will need to collect their discs directly from the parking office.
- Where salary deduction is not possible, staff must collect their parking disc after the proof of payment has been sent to the relevant parking co-ordinator.
Fines will be charged for any unauthorized parking, and photographic evidence may be collected in accordance with the POPIA Act. These images will not be distributed and will only be used for enforcement purposes. Unauthorized parking includes inter alia:
- Parking on university grounds by any vehicle not registered for access and not displaying the correct parking disc.
- Parking in contravention of any national or local traffic laws or regulations, e.g., parking on a red line, parking on a disabled parking bay, parking in front of gates or booms or parking that obstructs access to a fire hydrant.
Repeated transgressions by a cardholder may result in the temporary or permanent suspension of access to University parking, in addition to any other penalties or fines imposed by the relevant authorities.
- The applicant confirms that he/she is authorized to register the vehicle or vehicles for access to parking on the grounds of Stellenbosch University on behalf of the relevant division.
- The applicant undertakes that the driver(s) of the vehicle or vehicles will obey the rules applicable to university parking, as set out in the Terms and Conditions.
- The applicant accepts responsibility on behalf of the relevant division for the payment of any fines imposed for contravention of these rules by any of their drivers.
- To cancel a parking allocation, the applicant must submit a cancellation request to the relevant parking coordinator. Contact us
- The applicant accepts that without a cancellation request, he/she will remain responsible for the parking fees. This includes students that are in residences.
- Once the allocation is cancelled, the applicant may no longer park on university grounds and must make use of municipal or alternative parking options.
Types of Parking
Please note:
- Not all types of parking apply to all parking areas.
- Except where otherwise indicated, it is a prerequisite to all types of parking that the individual must apply for access to parking.
- The rules for parking on University grounds are set out in the Terms and Conditions for parking in the section above.

- NB: If a resident head wants to park on any other University parking other than the allocated parking at the relevant residence, the normal application procedures for this type of parking must be followed. The associated costs will also be charged.
- For disabled staff members
- Disabled staff members apply for access to parking electronically. The number of parking bays reserved specifically for disabled staff members will be determined according to the number of applications.
- One bay per area is available for ad hoc use (sporadic visitors).

- A group of parking bays within a specific parking zone (group of parking areas) allocated to a defined group of users, but no one has a claim to a specific parking bay. It works on the principle of first come, first served. Allocation and tariffs are valid from the beginning of January to the end of December.
- Should all marked parking bays be occupied, the relevant user must park in the Peripheral parking area. These areas are indicated on the map under Parking areas and maps. All registered users will receive automatic access to the periphery area for the purpose at no additional cost.
- In order to promote the optimal utilization of parking and allow for the movement of vehicles, more staff members will be allowed to non-reserved parking as the number of parking bays available. The percentage of additional access is determined by monitoring and the results of a yearly parking audit.
- The number of available parking bays per parking area is divided pro rata among the divisions that have access to the relevant parking area with the number of applications received at the first application closing date as point of departure.

Areas specifically intended for motorcycle parking will be clearly marked as such.
NB: Motorcycles may not park in a parking bay for motor vehicles, except if the owner applied for and has been allocated motor vehicle parking. In such a case the owner must also register his/her motorcycle with Transport Services so that it is clearly indicated that the motorcycle may indeed park legally on a parking bay for motor vehicles.
